lyrics

The first release on hinterland records presents Tobias Meggle’s new project, "sandboy", on a vinyl ep featuring four different singers, live drums and other acoustic instruments such as double bass, grand piano, guitar and violin.

The ep opens with "motion capture", a tight vignette in gyrating 5/4. This is about the natural drama of perception and was inspired by a boat ride through the klongs of Bangkok.
The portuguese vocal lines of "viver" are gliding serenely through varying soundscapes. The song bears witness to Meggle's love for the layered lightness of Brazilian music..
Based on half-time swing, "the hike" is a lush piece with a stream-of-consciousness lyric. Its electronic details were inspired by the tactile quality of the song’s acoustic source material.
"Les éclairs", a bilingual BrokenBeat experience, showcases a stark contrast of moods - from jagged rhythms to soothing vocal lines. The lyrics - in English, delicately dovetailed with French - show that out of the fragmentary and irregular a new continuum can grow.

reviews

"An amazing ep from a label which was new to all of us. 'the hike', which is our favorite track, sounds like a track for a new David Lynch movie with its mystical atmosphere. Beautiful sung by a new female singer called Marishka Phillips."
(DJ Pathless)

"First release from a very promising label. Sounding like the cinematic orchestra meets Jill Scott …mmmmmm."
(Dom Servini)

"One of our favourite records from last year. Through Germany, the beautiful voice of Marishka Phillips comes to us! The new Ursula Rucker."

"That track 'viver' is amazing to say the least. Nice Ferreira wowwwww!!! What a voice!!! Take nothing away from the rest of the 12, it’s a killer!!!!!"
(Gary Johnson)

" 'the hike' has shades of Ursula Rucker in Marishka Phillip’s vocals, and acertain Cinematic Orchestra or 4hero quality about it. Haunting piano, tight percussion and a heavy acoustic bass sound. Look out for great things from this outfit!"
