lyrics
wanderlust - "the desire to travel far away
and to many different places"
Sandboy’s debut album follows the successful "motion
capture" ep, songs from which were licensed numerous times
for compilations worldwide. His second 12" release "viver
remixed" with versions by butti 49 and volcov placed sixth
in the German Club Charts.
"wanderlust" consists of 9 original songs, one revision
and one instrumental (plus hidden track). The album developed in
2 years of collaboration with 5 female and 2 male vocalists who
sing and speak in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
With the exception of 2 songs recorded live only, all tracks consist
of a combination of electronic and acoustic elements, played by
10 different musicians on drums, percussion, double and electric
bass, acoustic and electric guitar, violin, bandoneon, melodica,
flugelhorn and trumpet. All keys and electronic elements using computers,
samplers, synthesizers as well as arrangements and production were
realized by Tobias Meggle.
"wanderlust" represents a wide variety of emotions, impulses,
insights orbiting the complex of a deeply human longing which we
call travel.
The album is brought underway by the the light yet highly energetic
texture of brazil track "viver". (It
took quite a bit of time to finally discover vocalist Nice Ferreira
in Kraiburg, Bavaria - out of all places!).
Nanar Vorperian’s (Break Reform, London) lyrics and vocal
on "written in the leaves" convey the
suave density and subtle feminity of an aim for the longterm.
"the hike" welcomes us into a world of
heightened sensory experience provoked by consciously tuning into
the lushness of nature. It was developed from live drums complemented
by tight percussion and a heavy acoustic bass sound. The voice of
Marishka Phillips (NYC) makes the spoken word song blossom in a
very memorable sung "conclusio".
A sudden turn towards the bilingual Broken Beat experience of "les éclairs"
introduces a stark contrast of moods - from jagged rhythms to the
calm vocal lines of Marianne Kirch (Munich).
"bsb" takes us to Brasilia, which - viewed
from above - has the shape of an airplane. Oscar Niemeyer’s
futuristic design on the grand scale seems to be reflected in the
monolithic, joyous calm of the song’s melodic elements carried
by piano and Nice’s vocal.
The geometric sparkle of instrumental track "inner
light" features Magnus Schriefl on trumpet.
A fast and playful quality is introduced by "pepe".
Singer Patrick Gammon (1956 - 1996) was a dear friend and colleague
of Tobias Meggle with whom he collaborated on his last album. The
original version of the track was recorded for Motown in 1976.
"motion capture" in gyrating 5/4 was
inspired by a boat ride through the klongs of Bangkok; the lyric
is dedicated to the sense of wonder instilled by ever unfolding
movements of perception.
"pomegranate" is the albums emotional
centerpiece: although Nanar has drawn her lyric’s inspiration
from the complexity of her partly Armenian background, she provides
us with a precious, kind, tangible reality of love to come home
to.
In the composition "nieve" which is laced
with bandoneon, Esther Proud (Munich) renders her poetic view of
the falling snow’s secret: let go to travel light.
"lua nua" finally draws the gaze to a
traditional destination of dream and ambition: Nice sings of her
relationship to the moon, closing the circle of "wanderlust".

"The album is a fantastic
twist on nu-jazz with subtle electronics, but 'Pomegranate' actually
moved me and kind of elevated itself off of the album for me. A
total downtempo, rainy-day headphone track, it features the beautiful
and talented Nanar from Break Reform on vocals."
(Adam Kurzawa/Giant
Step)
"This is no instant material. There are no fillers
on this one. These are true songs. A wonderful labour of love."
(Lensco/Beyondjazz)
"Beautiful. Lovely music and production with great
vocals - always a good combination!"
(Naveed Akhtar, Sing Sing Music)
"Sandboy, aka Tobias Meggle, clearly has a deep desire to
travel. Whether he physically satisfies this "Wanderlust" or not
isn’t clear, but thisalbum, his debut since leaving Compost’s
Beanfield, clearly goes some way to fulfil this need. Many of the
beautiful songs on this LP take the listener to far flung places,
whether it be the golden shores of Brazil (on 'Viver' and 'bsb')
or the rivers of Bangkok (on 'Motion Capture'). Meggle’s production,
all achieved in his isolated farmhouse in the German Alps features
Break Reform’s songstress Nanar Vorperian features on two tracks,
while 'The Hike' enlists the evocative spoken word of Marishka Phillips.
'Wanderlust' is a sumptous and uplifting work, and is obviously a
very personal album for Meggle. What’s more, after a few listens,
it’ll feel like a very personal album for you too. Top notch."
(SNC)
"Lovely album. Keep them coming!!"
(LTJ Bukem / Good Looking)
"The whole album is really nice. So into the 'viver'
track though. Playlisted and charted. Gets my full support."
(Kev Beadle /
Solar Radio / Sosho / Mind fluid)
"As one third of Beanfield for their first two albums,
producer Tobias Meggle has learnt his trade well. Here he steps out
on his own with
his solo, yet very collaborative, Sandboy project, on his own Hinterland
label. Gathering a selection of ten musicians and seven vocalists
to his rural studio outside Munich, Meggle has fashioned a delicate
and musical album of songs with a major Brazilian influence. 'Wanderlust'
stands up well to previous comparisons of Meggle’s singles
to 4 Hero, Ursula Rucker, and Cinematic Orchestra, with a similar
wide screen take on jazz and soul. A gentle treasure of an album.

"Got the album yesterday… it’s great! Lovely organic feel
to the music."
(Richard E, Solar Apple Quarktette/Further Out
Recordings)
"Recieved your Sandboy cd, yeah really excellent job man!
enjoyed it a lot, really love 'bsb'!"
(volcov/neroli production/archive)
"I really love the cd especially 'written in the leaves'
(the soulfultrack), 'pepe' and still 'viver'!! Great first full release!!"
(Erik
van Beek/MFP Collective/Flyin' High Records)
"It’s a great album, I have been listening to it non stop for
two weeks now. Really solid from start to finish, excellent stuff."
(Alan
Brown/Soul Seduction/Cuki)
"The personnel on this album encompass a wide variety
of musicians and vocalists, who line up alongside the producer, a
former member
of Compost’s Beanfield. An upshot of the assorted workforce is a
patchy album, with flashes of brilliance alongside equal moments
of dreariness. "Viver" gives life from its serene strings,
strong chords, pattering percussion and twinkling keys. The wonderful
Nanar Vorperian from Break Reform guests on "Written In Leaves",
where her devoted vocals sit alongside heavy handed keys and a cool
liquid bass. "Lua Nua" is a nice enough final cut, with
vivid keys, thinking percussion and wonderful flugal horn. At least
worth a listen…"

"This sound very classy and this album has very special
authentic feelings too."
(Tatsuo Sunaga)
"I really love the album! My favourite is the one with
the singer from Break Reform! And of course 'the hike'! I basically
love all
stuff on there…"
(Gerd/4lux)
"Thanks so much for the Promo CD. As expected it’s a killer.
Enjoyed every track, nice to listen to at home in the background,
but also some good playing out pieces too. Rest assured they will
be getting played at the JAZZROOMS."
(Gary Johnson)
"It truly is a wonderful piece of work."
(Paul Gamblin)
"…
, just had a chance to check out the Sandboy CD at last and I love
it. Very uplifting and soulful music. Some great vocalists and top
musicians too."
(Jimpster / Freerange Records)
"Thanks for the great album Wanderlust! The Motion
capture EP saved me from depression last spring and this album will
do the same this
year! Great work!"
(Simon Fagéus)
"It is simply fantastic… Amazing vocals and production value."
(Stephen
Hernandez / The Underground Lounge / Touch-N-Go Productions)
"I received the CD - Thank you! It sounds really nice - nice
work on the keys."
(Awanohara Hiro)
"I am so greatful for your cd, it is wonderful (my
girlfriend is always listening it :-) CONGRATULATION! We really love
it!"
(DJ Infragandhi)
"Former Beanfield member delivers an easy piano-driven
deep house track with clicks and bleeps and trumpets in all the right
places.
A classy cut from Sandboy's rather tasty debut album 'Wanderlust'."
(Steve
Kinsey / Vivacious)
(Groove)
"sehr geschmackvoll zusammengestelle cd. authentisch
und extrem warm. lässt jazz-herzen aufblühen…"
(zukie173)
"…
eines Patrick Gammon (erinnert schon stark an Al Jarreau). Sehr gut
von dir produziert."
(Sammy Majbour)
